The mural above is painted on a street close to my home. It marks a spot where yet another black life was taken without reason or sense.
With the Launch of BLM in 2012 following the murder of Trayvon Martin and the 2014 unrest in Ferguson Missouri around the killing of Michael Brown, along with the killing of Tamir Rice practically in my back yard, I sought a path toward understanding and change.
Through my church, The UU Church of Akron, I have worked to develop Anti-Racist programming, trainings and educational opportunities for both the congregation and the greater community. As a white person I needed to understand not only my privilege, but how the institutions this nation was built on perpetuated racism and white supremacy.
By building relationships with and supporting Black and POC lead organizations, partnering to address local racially driven issues and political advocacy and designing collaborative curriculum I hope to use my talents and privilege for good.
If you are interested in exploring how to address racism in your organization, let's talk.
